York County company lightens the landfill load
Chris Minnich, a machinist with Advance Polymer Control, loads plastic into a shredder. The company prides itself on keeping stuff out of landfills. It accepts pretty much anything that's plastic from companies and individuals. Advance Polymer Control then processes that material and sells it back to manufacturers and other industrial clients. Companies often want to give their unwanted plastic to Advance Polymer Control in order to avoid paying landfill fees in addition to paying fees to transport that material. (YORK DAILY RECORD/SUNDAY NEWS--JASON PLOTKIN) The Lancaster-Lebanon Intermediate Unit, a Lancaster-area educational services agency, used to have 25,000 videotapes for schools in Lebanon and Lancaster counties to use whenever they needed them.The agency, however, decided recently to scrap the videotapes for digital streaming services. That way, agency staff wouldn't have to deliver the tapes to the schools and the movies could be used by more than one teacher at a time.
The new approach, however, posed a problem for the agency, said Janet Dubble, the agency's director of instructional media services: how to dispose of 25,000 videotapes?
Lancaster-Lebanon had to destroy them, Dubble said, as part of its agreement with the tapes' publishers. Throwing them away was also a bad idea, Dubble said, lest they languish in a landfill forever.
Undeterred, agency staff turned to the yellow pages. There, a York County company had just the solution they were looking for.
Advance Polymer Control in Springfield Township takes pretty much any kind of plastic. The company turns excess plastic from molding companies into pellets that those companies can feed back into their molding processes.
The company also shreds unwanted plastic and sells it to a concrete company, which uses the shredded plastic to heat its kiln, according to Keith Hostler, Advance Polymer Control's president. Advance Polymer Control will pay for big trailer-loads of unwanted plastic, Hostler said, but usually can't pay for smaller items such as toys and computer parts, which are not as valuable.
Hostler worked for a molding company for several years, the last few of which he spent in its recycling center. When that company was bought out, the buyer wanted to sell its recycling center. Hostler bought it.
People bring all kinds of unwanted plastic to Advance Polymer Control, Hostler said, likely out of concern for the environment.

The shooting happened near Clipper Magazine Stadium around 7 p.m. The victim was shot at close range in the face, police said. Police learned that the suspect then fled the scene on foot and was last seen running south on N. Christian Street," a police news release states. Police said the suspect was described as a tall, thin Hispanic male. "Detectives have determined that this was not a random act of violence and that the suspect was known to the victim. The investigation is on-going, as Detectives continue pursuing leads in this case.
