I live in the Florida panhandle and when hurricane Ivan was on its way here (2004, I think) my 4 adult children living here urged me to leave. I was leaving in a few days anyway to go North for a sister's wedding reception, so I agreed to leave a week early. I felt terrible leaving my children/grandchildren here while I was going to safety. When I arrived in Iowa, I watched the weather channel as it showed the churning water, the bent-over trees, and roofs and debris flying everywhere. I was heartsick. I stayed up all night and watched as it approached our homes. The night it hit, I was watching and crying, sure my children were to be no more. At 3:30 am I got a phone call from my son in Pensacola - on the storm side of town - he said it had just gone through and he described all the damage to their house, but stressed that THEY were safe. I was so glad they called then, because after hanging up, the cell phone tower went down and we had no contact for several days, there was no power at any of my children's homes, but my home had lost only a couple shingles, a fence gate, a flag pole, a settee through the car window - but the power was still on! The kids who lived closer to my home all called with much less damage (not as close to the storm) but still no power and they were all OK!! I have a big Maple tree in my front yard that will have to be taken down as it is still suffering damage from the saltwater. The arborist told me the damage continues for years after such a storm! I had no idea! As I drove home, a different route as some roads were still out a couple weeks later, I was amazed at the devastation I saw and the smell. I will never cease being grateful to God for keeping my family safe from Ivan.
