There's a Frenchman after the crown jewels and the throne itself -- but not to worry, Johnny English (Rowan Atkinson) is on the case. Well, actually ... maybe a little worrying isn't out of order, considering how clumsy Johnny can be! Luckily, his zeal more than makes up for his bumbling manner. Let's hope that can help solve the crime of the century; if not, love in the form of double agent Lorna Campbell (Natalie Imbruglia) might. Sam Waterston portrays Sydney Schanberg, the New York Times journalist who won a Pulitzer for his coverage of the civil war in Cambodia. Aided by his translator, Dith Pran (Haing S. Ngor), Schanberg shines a light on the tragedy and madness of the bloody conflict. This harrowing drama based on Schanberg's memoirs was nominated for seven Oscars and won three: Best Cinematography, Best Film Editing and Best Supporting Actor for Ngor. Vin Diesel, Seth Green, Barry Pepper and Andrew Davoli co-star as the four sons of major Brooklyn mobsters who must team up to retrieve a bag of cash from a small Montana town ruled by a corrupt sheriff (Tom Noonan). It all begins when Matty Demaret (Pepper) goes on a job to deliver the money for his mob father (Dennis Hopper) on the advice of his uncle (John Malkovich). However, things don't quite go as planned. Yesterday was a day like any other, except I left for work about fifteen minutes earlier than usual. It was only because of this that I caught the tail end of James Van Praagh’s appearance on “Beth and Friends.”
I’d heard him on the show before, and admired his abilities. I once remembered a woman calling about her nephew who had died. He said the nephew wanted to tell her he was running now, running everywhere. The woman gasped, and said, “My nephew was in a wheelchair. He never walked a day in his life.” It gave me chills.
He was on the show promoting his appearance last night at Dobson High School, and was also promoting his new book about children moving into the afterlife, titled “Growing Up in Heaven.”
Well, Dobson High School is right by my house, and as is usual on a Friday night, I had no plans. I impulsively decided to go, and brought Alyssa with me.
It was general seating, first come first served, and we arrived early, but not early enough. There was a huge line. We got into it, and took our seats, toward the back of the middle of the auditorium.
James Van Praagh is quite the speaker. He had fascinating theories about the afterlife. He spoke for maybe forty-five minutes, and then, following a meditation, he “took messages.” Which meant he would point to a certain section of the audience, say he was sensing, say, someone named Janet, and then a person would raise their hand and he would talk to them a bit about things he saw. He did this for maybe 3 or 4 people.
Then he pointed directly toward us, and said, “I sense a little boy. Does this mean anything to anyone?”
Well, even though I was feeling shy, I had to raise my hand. He asked my name. He said, “The boy’s father is no longer with you.” I volunteered that my husband had committed suicide and taken our son with him. The whole audience gasped.
He said something about a hospital, which didn’t really resonate with me. Then he said he didn’t sense Conrad at all. He said something about him being “disconnected” or something to that effect.
Then it got freaky. He said my son “wants to go back to Hawaii.” Well, Conrad and I took him once, when he was very little, and he loved it.
THEN he said I had a pair of shoes of Max’s. Well, I do. In fact I was picking them up and holding them just the other day.
