Letters blog: Good reasons for Mideast policy change

IRVINE, Norman Ewers: Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was “incensed” when told that President Barack Obama would call for an end to the 60-year-old Israel-Palestine conflict by letting Israel keep the 78 percent of Palestine it seized in 1948 [“Thorny issues,” News, May 21]. What is it going to take to satisfy this guy?

Netanyahu is worried about the “security” of nuclear-armed Israel which already enjoys a commitment from the United States to protect its security and is, militarily, the 500-pound gorilla in the Middle East. What about Palestinian security? For more than 60 years they have been subject to a brutal Israeli occupation and colonization and are now willing to settle for a truncated state of their own, geographically divided and totaling only 22 percent of their ancestral home. [More letters on Obama] U.S. President Barack Obama speaks on U.S. policy in the Middle East at the State Department in Washington, D.C., U.S., on Thursday, May 19, 2011. Obama said a "new chapter in American diplomacy" is opening with democracy movements sweeping across the Middle East and North Africa and the death of al-Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden. MISSION VIEJO, Sidney P. Anderson: Regarding the letters, “ President prescribes death warrant for Israel ” [Letters, May 22], all of which opposed President Obama’s idea to base future “peace talks” on a return to the pre-1967 borders: One calls it akin to Hitler’s “Final Solution” and another charges that the idea stems from “either stupidity or prejudice ... there being no other explanation.”

IRVINE, Doug Sorey: Maybe it was too sophisticated for some to grasp but Obama’s speech made a proposal for negotiations between Israel and its neighbors [“ President prescribes death warrant for Israel,” May 22 ]. This was a negotiating point, and anyone who has bought a car might realize that you offer a price that you know is not going to be accepted but is a starting point.

In addition to reducing the regulations burdening California businesses, our state must enact legal reform to keep and create jobs.

So I've been having a few second thoughts about the direction I want to go in my research. I know I'm just starting grad school, and there's going to be tons more second thoughts where this came from, but... I've been very attached to this one research idea for years now. But... the thing is, I have been dedicating so much time and energy and passion in my life to the understanding the history of Palestine and the history of Zionism... I feel myself drawn to studying the history of the Middle East, esp. Palestine. But, I also have some serious professional/intellectual reasons to want to want to focus my research on the US occupation of the Philippines. My research is essentially about the history of the concept of development-- both psychological/ child development and economic/national development. (At the time it was called "race development.") And, for reasons that I won't get into right now, the US occupation of the Philippines is at the crux of this intersection-- how infantilization, nation-building, colonization, and schooling intersected. (Of course much of this intersection drew from the Native American boarding school project...) I have also noticed that I have, for the most part, avoided studying the eastern Mediterranean-- the part of the world where my family is from. Why is this? It is escapism? I'm not sure... But my research is taking me into the field of Pacific History-- looking at the Pacific as an interconnected historical reason, especially looking at the historica connections between Latin America, the US, the Philippines, Hawaii, Guam, Japan, China...
