Hearing leads to bus driver's termination

An open hearing started off the school board meeting Tuesday regarding the recommendation for the termination of school bus driver Eula Hogan. The request comes after two incidents involving Hogan on May 12. Hogan requested the hearing be open to the public.

One incident happened shortly after 2 p.m and the second one happened around 4 p.m., both at the bus lot.

Attorney Mike Moore, representing the school, opened the floor by calling transportation director Randy Deaton to testify. Deaton said he received a call from district mechanic Dustin Shelton that bus No. 17 was damaged when Hogan backed into a pole and that he reassigned him bus No. 12 to continue his route. He did not talk to Hogan at that time.

Deaton stated that he later received a call from administrative assistant Donna Mahfouz that Hogan had just ran into a fence and damaged the air conditioning unit at the administration building with bus No. 12. On his way to the office, Deaton flagged Hogan down at Mayflower and asked him to return with him to take a drug and alcohol test. Deaton told him at that time that he should have reported the accidents.

“After examining the two buses with Mr. Hogan and Mr. Shelton, I found that bus No. 17 was not usuable and No. 12 had damage to the cross arm and couldn’t be used,” Deaton said.

Hogan, representing himself, cross-examined Deaton and asked if a drug test was mentioned when Shelton called him about bus No. 17. Deaton said no, that it was not state required unless there were injuries, but that it is in school policy as an option for officials if they feel one is needed.

Shelton made his statement next saying he was in the shop and heard a noise and saw Hogan backing the bus up. He looked at the damage and decided it was not usable, sustaining damage to the front bumper, light and front cap. He assigned bus No. 12 to Hogan. Shelton returned to the lot after receiving a call from Deaton about the second incident.

Shelton said Hogan had taken bus No. 25 to finish out his route because he said No. 12 was having brake problems and was running low on fuel. However, when Shelton tested the bus in the lot that day and the following day by driving it around town and on the highway, the brakes worked fine and there were no signs of leaks.

Shelton was able to repair the buses with parts already in the shop, but the damage was estimated to be $234.68 to bus No. 12; $6,710.69 to bus No. 17 and $900 to the fence.

4. Induction neck loop compatibility – These are a type of headsets for hearing aid users. If the person is wearing a hearing aid on a daily basis, an induction neck loop compatible telephone should be considered.

Phones for the hard of hearing and for the elderly are available as corded and cordless. When you do your research make sure the device you are getting has features which are specifically made for the elderly.
