These are just a few of the terms that can be used to describe the beautiful and fun creations from the talented Angie Ford, owner and operator of Taylor’d Cakes.
A Lake Wilson native, Ford started decorating cakes a few years ago as a hobby. Between working full-time as a registered nurse, raising her two children Taylor and Brady, and helping her husband Bobby on the farm, she agreed to the requests from friends and family to create special cakes for birthdays and other fun occasions.
She became licensed through Kelly’s Koffee in Pipestone after what had started as a hobby turned into a business, but soon even the kitchen in Pipestone didn’t suit her needs.
“When I started looking at doing weddings cakes, there was just no way,” Ford stated. “It took up too much space.”
But a small house for sale in Lake Wilson soon got her thinking. Until just thinking about it wasn’t enough.
She purchased the house and started renovating. What was once a residence at 611 College Avenue is now a USDA-licensed kitchen, office and consultation room.
“I have 36 weddings between now and October,” she said with a smile. “Someone called a while ago wanting to know what dates I had open next June. She’s planning her wedding date around when I can make her cake. I was amazed.”
Through this year’s graduation season, in a two-week period, she made 110 dozen cupcakes and 28 cakes.
Her stacked cakes and non-traditional ideas are keeping customers calling.
“I don’t want them to walk out the door with a cookie-cutter cake,” Ford explained. “I like everything to be personal. I do sheet cakes, too, but not plain. I fancy them up with hand-modeled fondant figurines, or other fun things.”
