T-shirt bras and 'granny knickers' rule in poll of nation's favourite underwear

It can transform a woman's body shape and make or break an outfit. Now a new national poll has revealed America's favourite lingerie.

And while Timpa's colourful duet demi bra came out top in the consumer-voted Undie Awards, other winners all appear to have been based on practicality.

The most popular briefs were the high-waisted Lace Nouveau panty from Vanity Fair, while the the best strapless bra was a super-simple number from Bali Concealers.

The Chantelle Sublime design was the most popular push-up bra, and the seamless Rhonda Sheer Ahh style came top in the new Leisure Bra category.

The awards also took into account the range of choice for larger cup sizes, rating Fantasie's smoothing T-shirt bra, which comes in sizes D to H, as the favourite overall, winning the classic design its third Undie Award.

The awards' organisers explained: 'I t really does give full figure women great support without seams for a totally seamless look under t-shirts. This bra is also not full-coverage, so the wearer gets a lighter look.'

The highest-rated sports bra in the category was from the label's sister company, Freya, while the Goddess lace longline bra, which features a corseted bodice, was the favourite strapless style.

There was a flash of colour among the winners when it came to thongs and boy-shorts, with Hanky Panky, known for its flirty coloured lace creations, taking home two awards.

The label's thong design, which wins the award for the third year running, has 'stood the test of time', according to the Undie Awards' website.

Shapewear, of course, is a huge market for the lingerie industry, and while Spanx may be the most famous brand name, it was Barely There's Invisible Look Hi-Waist Smoother that proved the highest-rated among consumers.

The Undie Awards review of the Barely There design read: 'A wearer doesn't have that constant feeling of being constrained, so can wear it all day and forget she has it on. The high waist and seamless construction give a totally smooth look from bust to knee.'

Menswear was not neglected either. The top brief was by Munsingwear, while the best knit boxer was from 2xist. Calvin Klein was the overall leader in the men's category though, proving the favourite woven boxer, trunk and thong.
