Allstate Discloses May Catastrophe Losses
Announced that it estimated it would realize $0.6 billion worth of losses, pretax, for catastrophes in the month of May. Given the relatively large number of tornadoes in the period, most notably a very large loss event in Joplin, Missouri, this estimate is slightly below our previous expectations, given Allstate's share of the market. We will run the updated catastrophe estimate through our model but do not anticipate a change to our fair value estimate. When combined with Allstate's previously announced $1.4 billion catastrophe loss for April, the company has disclosed quarter-to-date losses of $2 billion. This figure is much higher than average for this early in the year, as catastrophes are usually centered around hurricanes, which occur in the third quarter. That said, insurance companies such as Allstate are in the business of assuming underwriting risk and occasionally face large claims payments. We believe Allstate has the financial capacity to withstand this recent string of catastrophes and may be able to justify price increases to improve future profitability. Pacific Hurricane Season
The Northwest Pacific Ocean, Typhoon season: Year round, and is the most active basin in the world. Most typhoons form July through November. Guam, the Philippines, southeast China, and Japan are all within this zone.
The Bay of Bengal or, Arabian Sea, harsh Cyclonic storm season: Early April through the end of December. This basin has a double maximum because of the monsoon through moving through at two different times of the year. Maximums occur from mid April through May and from mid September through mid December. India, Bangladesh, and Myanmar are all affected by these tropical cyclones.
The Southwest Pacific Ocean, mid October through May 1 is considered Severe Tropical Cyclone Season. These tropical cyclones may affect eastern Australia.
The Southeast Indian Ocean, mid October through May is also considered Severe Tropical Cyclone Season. These tropical cyclones may affect northern and western Australia. Mid January, and mid February through early March, this basin has a double maximum.
