Reward offered after attempted theft
A £1,000 reward is on offer for information leading to the arrest of a gang that tried to steal cable from a railway line in Farnborough, causing huge delays.
The would-be thieves bungled their attempt to steal the cable – but it was left cut and damaged at a substation on the evening of Thursday June 9, causing delays due to the resulting loss of signalling between Farnborough and Woking.
Journeys between London Waterloo and Farnborough Main that normally take 35 minutes lasted more than five hours as some passengers were left stranded in stationary trains.
Network Rail and Crime-stoppers are offering the reward for information that leads to the conviction of those responsible.
David Mitchell, a creative interactive designer from Fleet, eventually made a sign to show through the windows pleading for help from station staff.
He got home after midnight, having boarded a Waterloo train at 6pm.
He said: “Passengers on the train opposite to us started to jump out and walk down the tracks to Woking – not the best idea ever, but I don’t blame them."
