CD Review: The Essential Rosanne Cash

Johnny Cash has two musical offspring (not counting June Carter Cash's daughters from previous marriages): his and June's son John Carter Cash and his daughter Rosanne, from his first marriage to Vivian Liberto.  Each carry the Cash flame their own way. Without question, Rosanne whose vision embraces both her dad's musical traditions and a distinct vision of her own, has left a lasting impact over the past three decades.

Cash's early work had a punkish edge, though she began with mainstream country records including a Top Twenty duet with Bobby Bare titled "No Memories Hangin' Round" from her 1979 debut album Right or Wrong. and three 1980 hits from the album: the title track, "Blue Moon with Heartache" and "My Baby Thinks He's A Train," a neo-rockabilly tune written by original Asleep at the Wheel member Leroy Preston (the Wheel recorded it couple years earlier).

Here's a 1988 Cash performance of "Train" from the Cinemax special A New Tradition: Live at Fisk University, featuring a smoking hot solo by guitarist Steuart Smith (later a member of the Eagles) and pedal steel guitarist Sonny Garrish.  The grey-haired guitarist giving her a peck on the cheek is Sun rockabilly icon Carl Perkins of "Blue Suede Shoes" fame, a former member of Johnny Cash's touring show.  The backup singers behind her are the immortal Jordanaires.

The 80's were truly Cash's decade, and she ended up categorized as part of country's New Traditionalist movement, a school of younger singers (Dwight Yoakam, Randy Travis, Keith Whitley) with a more basic, yet modern approach to country.  Along with her own songs and some written with Crowell, she picked from the best new composers of that time, among them John Hiatt ("The Way We Mend a Broken Heart") and Tom Petty ("Never Be You").

She established a strong presence on albums with stellar efforts like Somewhere in the Stars, Rhythm and Romance inspired by a real-life, old-school Louisville Kentucky record store. which yielded four # 1 singles.  Her idiosyncratic style blended her own songs with chart-topping revivals of the Beatles' country-flavored 60's hit "I Don't Want to Spoil the Party" and her dad's 1961 hit "Tennessee Flat-Top Box" (Johnny's original only reached # 11).  Here's another rendition of "Box.

An Itch for Pathos: "Seven Year Ache" - Tartuffe's Folly

"Who does your past belong to today?”

The nostalgia of such an innocent day is yet bittersweet. Sadly, there is neither a scant trail of a witness, nor a memory of motive. I am, however, thankful that even self indulgence warrants a statute of limitations. I admit nothing from the Reagan years, except my steadfast preference for his opponent and my love for clever pop tunes. My photo albums have long since been purged, and are now illustrated with scribbles from my journal. The process of soundtracking is ever endless, along with my regret. Perhaps, I "saw" something with my ears. And if we run scarce of provisions, there is always the bait shop down the dirt road.

My spirit navigates freely from that of Pied Piper to bookworm to Lord Fauntleroy to that of a Bohemian crusader. You best pour a healthy cup of coffee or glass of pinot noir.

I am a disengaged designer, scribe, and recidivist currently living in the hinterlands of Raleigh, North Carolina. I strive to be kind and I seek out those moments of hope that indeed refuel my soul. Often, the most potent of inspiration is found in random human connections, unexpected art finds, and the magic that cloaks our world.

And, yes, we have pets here at Marklewood: a dozen at most recent census. I refer to them fondly as the Twelve Noble & Apostolic Pusses, but they are much more than any label or moniker would suggest. All are indeed rescues or their progeny, with five having been elevated to "indoor" status. The other seven serve sentry here in the stillness of an ancient pine woods. And if we run scarce of provisions, there is always the bait shop down the dirt road.

Alas, poor Tartuffe has been missing since May of '10. Legend has it that he has embarked on some grand theatrical adventure, perhaps in New York. But I like to think that his spirit hovers over head.
