COLUMBIANA-The Crestview Alumni Association held its annual banquet on May 21. Ten new members were inducted into the Distinguished Alumni Hall of Fame and eight graduating seniors were awarded a $1,000 scholarship each from the alumni association. Over 165 people attended the banquet.
2011 Inductees
-Lela McKenzie was valedictorian of the Class of 1929, Fairfield High School. She is a long-term educator having taught second, third and fourth grades before dedicating her life to special education. McKenzie retired from teaching in 1976 and since retirement has continued to stay active in the Retired Senior Volunteer Program, the Leetonia Library Board, and Hutton's Nursing Home.
-Allan Chamberlin has dedicated his life to public service. He has served eight years on the Columbiana County School Board, 11 years as Fairfield Township Trustee and 12 years as Columbiana County commissioner before his retirement in 1984. He has also served as president of the Columbiana County Farm Bureau along with serving as a leader in numerous other organizations.
-Betty Beight graduated valedictorian of the Class of 1948, New Waterford High School. She graduated magna cum laude from Youngstown State University in 1980. Beight served as treasurer for Crestview Schools for 31 years from 1969-2000. As treasurer, she was responsible for automating the bookkeeping system and provided financial oversight to the construction of the new schools and bus garage.
-Donald Blosser graduated from Goshen College in 1959. He received his PhD from the University of St. Andrews, Scotland in 1979. He served as the president of Oakwood Christian Leadership Academy from 2001, until his retirement in 2006. Blosser is a founding member of the "New Perspectives on Faith for a New Millennium." Throughout his life, he has been an author, a noted speaker, a professor and a college president.
-Judith Fannin graduated from Bowling Green University in 1968 with a BA in psychology and sociology. In August of that year she began her career in the Columbiana County Department of Public Welfare. In 1972, she was promoted to supervisor of the division. In 2005, she was promoted to program administrator and remained in that position until her retirement in 2009. Fannin was the face and voice of child welfare in Columbiana County for 35 years.
-Carol Bretz is currently the executive director of the Columbiana County Community Action Agency. She has served in this position since 1989. Under her leadership the organization has grown from 89 employees and a $3.5 million budget to 240 employees and a $12 million budget. Under Bretz's leadership, CAA has developed Health and Dental Centers, expanded the Head Start Program and developed a Consumer Credit Counseling Program.
