Woman Shows Neighborhood's Blight After Lost Dog Signs Yanked

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. -- Terry Knight said the code compliance supervisor who tore down her lost dog fliers missed several violations along the way while he was in the north end neighborhood.

Knight said she and Gloria Sajnaj began papering the neighborhood with fliers after Sajnaj's 13-year-old dog, Gretchen, wandered off last week.

That is until Robert Creston, supervisor of the city's Code Compliance Division, told them he was taking down the fliers.

"I said, 'Don't you have something better to do?' And he said, 'No, not really. This is against code and that's what I'm doing today,'" Knight told WPBF 25 News.

What makes the longtime north end residents particularly upset is having their lost dog signs taken down while there are plenty of more pressing code violations in the area.

"I don't think the mayor will appreciate that he is spending his time tearing down these signs all over the city, rather than going two blocks west of here and seeing how bad it is in the north end," Knight said.

Knight said in an email that Creston has "nothing better to do," even though photos she took of the neighborhood show trash and furniture laying in the street, homes that have seemingly been boarded up for quite some time and vacant lots with mattresses and other debris strewn about.

Palm Beach County Animal Care and Control states on its website that pet owners should "place bright colored (fliers) in the neighborhood with a clear and current photo of the lost animal."

This seems to contradict West Palm Beach code.

Community Improvement Manager Mark Joyce, who is Creston's supervisor, said putting up signs in the city is illegal, but if it had been a few signs for a couple of days, his office likely would have overlooked it. However, Joyce said he's gotten a lot of residents' complaints about other signs littering the neighborhood.

So your dog likes your furniture…. : Dog Blog | Dog Training | Dog ...

Like most people, man’s best friend will do anything for comfort. This often leads them to your nice, expensive couch, lounge chair or even your bed! Now for those who like to set some limits for their pets, breaking a pooch out of this bad habit can be quite a task. There have been many blogs about getting your dog away from your furniture but for many of them, it only take a bit of common sense to see that they will never accomplish more than harming your beloved pet or wasting your money.

Your aim is to ensure your dog no longer enjoys lounging and thereby soiling, your upholstered furniture. Some have resorted to using commercial spray repellants. This has been recommended since a bottle is generally relatively inexpensive and should have little or no harmful effects on your dogs. But   covering your couch and other furniture in a protective mask of repellant on a daily basic could add up to quite a pretty penny. Many are also reluctant to spray any chemical on their upholstered furniture especially since the claims these repellants make of being odorless often remains only promises.

One very simple technique that could be used instead involves simple closing the door after you leave a room. This is the most effective way to keep your pet away from any furniture they may be attracted to lying on when you’re not around. This might however prove a challenge for areas like the family room which generally are open spaces that do not have doors. By far, covering your couch in til foil, has been the most unconventional solution to keeping your dog off the family room furniture, since the noise it will make will give them quite the scare. It has even proven effective in some cases, but some dogs eventually realize that tin foil in harmless and simply push it aside to get to their favorite spot.

Electrostatic mats are also an option, though not the most preferred for most pet lovers. These are devices placed on furniture, like couches, which give pets an slight electrical pulse every time they come in contact with it. These however are often very pricy and are discouraged as a the first option for keeping your pooch off your  furniture. Having a chair designated to your dog has been suggested. This is a highly discouraged practice since your dog probably might use any chair as their own once they are allowed to freely rest on a lounge chair when they so desire.

Proper training can also do a world of good. Discourage your dogs’ bad behavior from the get go by being stern when commanding them to get off the couch or whatever piece of furniture they have found themselves on. Finally, provide ‘incentives’ for their good behavior, such as sleeping in their designated areas.
