But like a cannonball-gone-wrong, Color’s mighty splash into the public pool irked too many people and injured the company in the process.
Today, VentureWire confirmed Color co-founder and President Peter Pham has already left the start-up, the latest sign of distress for the young company. As TechCrunch earlier reported , Pham parted ways more than a month ago, amid critical reviews of the company’s application. While wishing Pham well, company spokeswoman Melody Serafino said in an email: “From time to time Bill shuffles his team. He has a history of it,” referring to the other co-founder, Chief Executive Bill Nguyen.
That’s an odd way to put it — rarely do you see one of the faces of a start-up leave so quickly after such a dramatic public debut. We’re trying to reach all the players involved, including Color’s investors, Bain Capital and Sequoia Capital, to uncover the juicy details. But it’s clear this company’s launch was poorly executed.
You might recall a few months ago one of the great media blitzes by any start-up in recent memory. Ahead of its launch, Nguyen and Pham worked up journalists and bloggers with the story about how his company had developed a revolutionary social-networking app that lets people share photos with others nearby.
Adding fuel to the story: Nguyen had sold his last company, online music streaming site Lala, to Apple for $80 million, and Color managed to raise gobs of cash from the likes of early Google investor Sequoia Capital. It was the most the venture firm had invested in a company pre-launch, including Google. And, as Nguyen recalled to us , Sequoia told him, “Not since Google have we seen this.”
Then came the barrage of stories on launch day: Forbes magazine sent nine of its reporters to roam the Museum of Modern Art in New York to try out the app, then they each gave their review of it. GigaOm wondered whether Color’s team was worth the $41 million alone. CNN included a segment on Color, with the stirring intro: “We’re in Palo Alto, California, the heart of Silicon Valley. For the last six months, a team of engineers has developed a secret app — so secret that they put paper on the windows to block public view. Well now it’s being released to the world — and if you believe what they are saying, this application will be as revolutionary…as Facebook and Twitter.
