Turn Your IPhone Into "Un-Alarm" Clock
The product includes an iPhone app, a charging dock and a wristband that is placed around the user's wrist before going to sleep at night. After setting the awake time on the docked smartphone, the user can drift off, while the device tracks sleeping patterns.At the appointed hour, the wristband vibrates, rousing the wearer from sleep. The vibrations are gentle but persistent, leading to a less jarring awakening, and also won't affect anyone who is sleeping with, or near, the wearer.
Lark hit markets today with two versions, the basic un-alarm clock running $130, and the more expanded product with the addition of the "sleep coach" feature, which uses the intelligent wristband to track sleep patterns in an effort to improve sleeping abilities, for $190.
The app was built in consultation with Dr. Jo Solet, a Harvard sleep expert, and Cheri Mah, a professional sports sleep coach.
The basic version shows users the time spent sleeping, how long it took to fall asleep, how many times the user awoke during the night and rates overall sleep quality. The more expensive "pro" version is filled with pie charts, statistics and tips on improving sleep patterns.
While many mobile devices and their apps are being blamed for increasing stress, anxiety and insecurity while also reducing sleep, Lark is amongst a growing trend of technology products aimed at helping improve health and welfare.
Consulting firm Ernst & Young reported recently that the pharmaceutical industry is building its investment in healthcare apps , creating several programs which help people eat right, track blood sugar levels, and even their chemotherapy appointments.
In fact, the shift is so great that the Food and Drug Administration is considering regulating healthcare apps , something it doesn't currently do.
While only available for Apple device from the Palo Alto, Calif-based company's website, and soon to be available at Apple stores on Jun 14, an Android version of the Lark is in the works and should be released soon.
