New Bruce Mines council digs nearly ready
Council plans to move its municipal office into a new location at the former Bed and Bath Shop, a few hundred yards west of its present site.
It will then start making plans on what to do with the existing community hall; either tear it town and build from scratch, or renovate.
"As soon as we move into our new municipal office, we will start discussing the future of our community hall, which has a lot of flaws," Mayor Gord Post said.
"But the hall is going to remain open until the end of this year to fill commitments to groups and the like. Then, hopefully, we will be ready to go full-steam ahead with work on the structure."
The previous council, under former mayor Darren Foster, hoped to construct a $5.2-million all-purpose complex on the water side of Highway 17, incorporating the municipal offices, marina complex offices, meeting rooms, community hall, gym, youth facilities and public washrooms.
However, that council banked on federal government stimulus funding.
There was a $500,000 grant in the bank, courtesy of the provincial government, to go toward the planned structure. But stimulus funding never materialized, Foster lost the mayor's job to Post, and three sitting councillors were defeated in the last municipal election.
The four new faces were against trying to proceed with a $5.2-million complex with no guarantee of government funding.
"I was not against the proposed new complex per se," Post said.
"I was just not prepared to see our ratepayers on the hook for a huge tax bill to pay for it when the hoped-for stimulus funding was not forthcoming."
The new council was quick to hold town hall meetings to get input from ratepayers, subsequently opting to make an offer on the Bed and Bath Shop, which went on the market at the time. It was originally Yancey's Meat Products business, located just inside the entrance to Bruce Mines from Highway 17.
The asking price for the building was $150,000, and the town's original offer was $85,000. It was eventually bought it for $92,000 and work to revamp it began immediately four weeks ago after the deal was closed .
Renovations are nearing completion, and when the new offices open, they will be a startling contrast to the present community hall, the mayor said.
"For a long time, we have heard people visiting our municipal offices saying that there was a distinct foul odor upon entering the complex," Post said.
