Learn how to make perfect garden soil by composting at a workshop from 2 to 4 p.m. Tuesday at Heathcote Botanical Gardens, 210 Savannah Road in Fort Pierce. Master gardener Adina Lehrman will talk about various methods of composting, the simple science that makes it work and how you can make it work in your garden. Are lionfish coming?

Bob Hickerson and Maria Andreu, local divemasters who have been involved in lionfish eradication efforts in Florida and the Cayman Islands, and Pamela Schofield with the U.S. Geological Service will give a presentation titled "Lionfish: A Perfect Invader?" at 7 p.m. Wednesday at Harbor Branch Oceanographic Institute, 5600 N. Take a new app-roach

The Treasure Coast chapter of the Florida Public Relations Association will sponsor its annual media conference, titled "Your Technology Makeover," from 8 to 11:30 a.m. Friday at Indian River State College's Treasure Coast Public Safety Training Complex, 4600 Kirby Loop Road in Fort Pierce. Michelle Foley, manager of community relations and public affairs for the Moffitt Cancer Center in Tampa, will discuss "New Apps for a New Image" on how a major business goes from traditional media into social media, client and patient interaction, informational blogs and more. Be turtle-friendly

The Manatee Observation and Education Center and the St. Lucie County Cooperative Extension Service will conduct a free brown-bag lunch presentation titled "Turtle Friendly Beaches" at noon Manatee Observation and Education Center, 480 Indian River Drive in Fort Pierce. Extension Agent Ken Gioeli will talk about how homeowners and businesses can comply with sea turtle-friendly lighting requirements and how visitors to Treasure Coast beaches can be "turtle friendly," especially during nesting season from March 1 to Nov. 15, on Treasure Coast beaches. Film focuses on Afghanistan

"Rethink Afghanistan," a documentary focusing on key issues of the war, will be shown at 7 p.m. Sunday at the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship, 27th Avenue and 16th Street in Vero Beach. Made in 2009 by director Robert Greenwald, the full-length documentary raises questions about the country, troops, the cost of the war, Afghan women, civilian casualties, security and possible solutions.
