Friday, June 10, 2011: PSAL in hot water with Federation partners
&Nbsp; Leading off today: Someone forgot to tell New York City that it's spring championship weekend across the state. Two big pieces of news emerging from the Big Apple tell us that NYC isn't ready to let go of basketball season.PSAL on the outs with partners: The other organizations that join the PSAL in forming the Federation want the NYC public school league to explain why it allowed two schools to play in ESPN's made-for-TV tournament this spring.
The CHSAA has gone so far as to ask its schools to not schedule games or scrimmages against PSAL schools, The New York Post reported Friday. The CHSAA wants to know if the state Board of Education plans sanctions after the Boys & Girls boys team and Murry Bergtraum girls played in the ESPN Rise National High School Invitational the week after the New York State Federation tournament.
By approving the trips, the PSAL appears to have violated Federation rules defining the end of the winter sports season. "We're all a member of the Federation, and if you join an association you should follow the rules," CHSAA president Ray Nash told the paper.
Though the CHSAA has the most at stake among Federation members if the PSAL is hit with sanctions -- the two organizations play numerous games and scrimmages each season and Staten Island's leading league is composed of members from both -- other governing bodies are also watching closely.
The paper reported that the New York Public High School State Athletic Association has also asked the Department of Education to inquire why the PSAL allowed its teams to play in the ESPN tournament. A source with the New York State Association of Independent Schools said its league would follow along with the CHSAA and NYSPHSAA decide.
Calhoun to UConn: Christ the King shooting guard Omar Calhoun , likely to be New York City's top player next season, verbally committed to the University of Connecticut on Friday, The New York Post reported. The 6-foot-5 junior was considering Georgetown, Kentucky, Maryland, North Carolina, Pittsburgh, Seton Hall, Villanova and West Virginia.
Calhoun, who visited UConn on Thursday, led the CHSAA AA league in scoring at 20.1 points per game last season. He's the second player in Christ the King history to reach 1,000 career points as a junior.

I have no idea if I'll be able to make it out to the NYSPHSAA track meet at Caledonia-Mumford -- back spasms have thrown be for a loop the last two days -- but there will be a ton of reporters on-site at all the championship venues.

Some eyebrows were raised Wednesday night when UK Quarterback Morgan Newton sent out a tweet suggesting his teammates weren't working hard enough to prepare for the upcoming season. I look as this as a good sign Newton has assumed the leadership role, but a negative sign the team may not be focused as a whole. No one player is going to be great this year and carry the team the way Randall Cobb did last year, so everyone is going to have to work as hard as they can in order for this team to be successful. Team effort is key. Also, UK RB Raymond Sanders had arthroscopic knee surgery today to repair a cartilage tear. He's expected to be full-go by training camp. The Pistons have requested permission from the Dallas Mavericks to interview assistant coach Dwane Casey, who was taking part Thursday in the Mavericks' championship parade in Dallas. Casey and Boston Celtic's assistant coach, Lawrence Frank are also the two finalists for the Toronto Raptors' coaching vacancy. Its looking more and more likely the former UK guard will get another shot at being a head coach in the NBA. 2012 guard Rodney Purvis recently said that the two schools that stand at the top of his list of schools he's considering right now are Duke and N.C. State. ``Those are probably the two that have been on me the hardest,” he said. He also said that if former Louisville assistant Tim Fuller hadn't left for Missouri, he'd still be committed to the Cardinals. ``If Tim Fuller had stayed at Louisville, I’d still be committed,” Purvis said.
