Blue Oyster Cult never gets tired of hearing 'more cowbell'
Eric Bloom is seated in the exact same spot on the couch in his Long Island, N.Y., home when he was watching "Saturday Night Live" back in 2000.
In a parody of VH1's "Behind the Music," the supposed recording session of Blue Oyster Cult's 1976 hit "Don't Fear the Reaper." A producer, played by Christopher Walken, goaded fictional band member Gene Frenkel (played by Will Ferrell, who also wrote the sketch).
"I was more shocked than amused," the band's lead singer said in a phone interview. "It's not every day you turn on TV and see something about you. Especially on national TV, because we've always been sort of an underground kind of phenomenon."
While the fictional Frenkel played the cowbell with gusto in the sketch, it was actually Bloom who was on the percussive instrument in the original recording.
"The cowbell's been very good to us," Bloom said. "It's actually become part of American vernacular at this point. When you say ‘more cowbell,' people know what you're talking about."
Blue Oyster Cult is still out on the road, about 90 percent of the time from May to October, said Bloom, 66. Many times they're alongside fellow 1970s-'80s acts Styx, Cheap Trick, Kansas and Journey.
On Saturday, the band headlines a grandstand show at the Mississippi River Motorcycle Rally in Davenport.
Because the band was a staple of the "progressive" FM radio stations in the 1970s, it didn't have major hits but gained a following greater than band members realized.
"We were just working and touring and writing and didn't give any thought to history of what impression we'd give or what history would say about your career," Bloom said. "We were just five guys trying to play some rock ‘n' roll and find a place for ourselves.

I believe this clip is from a Saturday Night Life episode in 1997. It is by far one of the best SNL shorts. Kevin Spacey plays Christopher Walken as Han Solo and the late Walter Mattau as Obi Wan Kenobi and Darrell Hammond plays Richard Dryfus as C-3PO. The man is a genius and I think gets much too little credit for his acting abilities. I’m not sure if I’ve ever laughed so hard at someone who is not considered a “comedian”.
