Thoracic Outlet Syndrome – Medical Conditions And Symptoms ...

Thoracic outlet syndrome signs or symptoms may result in a burning, tingling and numb feeling felt in the arm, hand, and fingers. In thoracic outlet syndrome (also known as compression syndrome), the nerves and blood vessels are compressed or squeezed as they exit the neck region and travel into the shoulder and arm. If a nerve is compressed, you may experience weakness in your hands. If a vein is compressed, your hands may feel cold, or look pale or bluish. This short report is provided to take a closer look at the symptoms associated with this disorder as well as the causes, diagnostic tests and medical treatments .

Thoracic Outlet Syndrome Symptoms And Causes

Symptoms will vary in intensity from person to person but may involve:

Dull and achy pain, tingling, and numbness in the neck, shoulders, arms, or hands Poor circulation in the hand resulting in a cold hands, bluish or pale-colored hands, or a swollen arm Weakness in the hands or a weak grip

The pain and discomfort may be worse at night and can disrupt sleep. The pain may also be aggravated by carrying a large or heavy object.

This condition is caused when blood vessels and nerves move through the Thoracic Outlet, which is a slender area close by the shoulder and collarbone. As they pass from the neck through this space on the way to the arms there may not be adequate room. Compression can be caused by a congenital anomaly like an extra cervical rib, an abnormally tight band connecting the vertebra to the rib, or scar tissues. Harm in the area owing to trauma, or overuse of the shoulder may additionally result in the issue.

Having a lengthy neck and droopy shoulders may put a person at greater risk of developing this disorder .

Thoracic Outlet Syndrome Diagnosis And Treatment

A review of the individual’s history may share past trauma or overuse of the shoulder and this information may help form a diagnosis. A physical examination may also be performed along with exams such as electromyography (EMG), CT angiogram, MRI, Nerve conduction velocity study and X-ray.

Treatment will depend on what triggered the disorder.  Physical therapy aimed at improving flexibility, range of motion and postural stance may be ample to ease signs and symptoms. Pain relievers and/or muscle relaxants may also be helpful.

Surgery may be required in serious cases or in cases where physical therapy and a change in routines which use the shoulder do not improve the signs or symptoms.
