High school volleyball: Stack excellent for East

"I'm totally shocked," said Stack. "My entire team could have gotten (the MVP award) because they're all amazing players. I was so lucky to get a chance to play with such a great team."

The Fairfield High School product, who will play volleyball next year at Goshen College, didn't think she played well Monday in Indiana East's 3-1 win over Metro.

"I wanted to play better tonight and I'm happy that I did," Stack said.

Trailing 22-18 in game one, Stack had four straight kills to pull Indiana East even with Michigan at 22.

"Jamie comes from an outstanding program at Fairfield," said Indiana East coach Mark Heeter. "In my opinion, Fairfield is more known for passing, but Jaime can certainly hit. She's surprisingly quick off the floor. She also has a quick arm swing and can put the ball down with some authority."

Indiana East's final two points in game one came from Melanie Meyer on a kill and a stuff block.

"Our kids played really well tonight," Heeter said. "I think that first game was huge. We got seven of the last eight points and Michigan looked a little down after that."

Indiana East also finished strong in game two, scoring five of the final seven points. Game two was tied 13 times before Indiana East ended with a flourish.

"(Indiana East) had better ball control than we did," said Michigan coach Robert Elliott. "They put balls where they needed to put them to get points."

Michigan tied game three at 13 before Kaci Heeter's kill started a 12-3 run for Indiana East to end the third game and the match.

"We won another tight one (in game two) then we were really able to pull away (in game three)," Heeter said.

For Indiana East, Meyer totaled five kills and Melanie Troyer was a defensive standout with 11 digs. Gabby Baur and Emily Kozinski each had five kills to lead Michigan offensively.

"Would I have liked a better outcome? Yes. But, hopefully, this was fun for our girls," Elliott said. "Our team played well. Indiana East just played better."

Evangelist, Gardener, Nurse - Meet Carol Dorough by Christy Brink ('12) Posted: Jun 6th, 2011 Category: Academics

She’s been known to plant seeds in the soul and now in the garden. Once an evangelist, Carol Dorough, Ed.D. is an avid gardener who also happens to be a nurse.

After marrying her college sweetheart 38 years ago, Dorough and her husband began traveling around the country as evangelists while raising two children. But her dream of being a nurse, something she’d wanted since childhood, never died. She went back to school, studied hard and accomplished her dream. She would work in several positions before moving to Indiana in 2010 to take the position of nursing dean for Bethel College.

Dorough took some time out of her schedule to tell me a little about her multifaceted life.

Read her Q & A here.
