The University of Akron Department of Athletics, in conjunction with the Mid-American Conference, announced on Wednesday start times for its 2011 football home games. All six home outings, including the annual battle for the Wagon Wheel against neighborhood rival and league divisional opponent Kent State on Nov. 12, will be held on a Saturday at InfoCision Stadium – Summa Field. After starting the season on Sept. 3 at Big Ten opponent Ohio State in a noon ET ESPN HD or ESPN2 HD telecast, Akron opens its home schedule versus MAC East Division peer Temple on Sept. 10 at 6 p.m. on ESPN3, the network’s broadband channel. A variety of special events will encompass the day, including a salute to local heroes (police, fire, safety) and a Military Appreciation Day, as well as ticket promotions designed for employees of both the city of Akron and Summit County, and local motorcycle organizations. UA resumes conference play at West Division member Eastern Michigan on Oct. 1 at 1 p.m., before enjoying a three-game homestand that begins with a nonconference meeting with Florida International, which competes in the Sun Belt Conference, on Oct. 8 for Homecoming. The FIU contest will kick off at 2 p.m., and be the finale to a week-long schedule of programming on campus to include a parade and other events geared toward students, and alumni and their families. The UA volleyball team takes on Kent State (5 p.m.), and the defending national champion Zips men’s soccer squad competes against Northern Illinois (7:30 p.m.) on campus that day as well. The University of Virginia first started playing college football in 1888. Their all-time record is 601-521-48 for an overall winning percentage of .534. The postseason bowl record for the Cavaliers is 7-9. Virginia has won 3 conference titles (1 in the SIAA and 2 in the ACC), but no national titles. The Cavaliers were members of the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Association (SIAA) from 1894-1921, then played in the Southern Conference from 1921-1937, were Independent from 1937-1952, and then joined the Atlantic Coast Conference in 1953. In 1984, under head coach George Welsh, the Virginia Cavaliers appeared in and won their first bowl game when they defeated Purdue in the Peach Bowl by a score of 27-24. The 1989 season saw the Cavaliers go 10-3 for their best regular season ever. They lost to the University of Illinois in the Florida Citrus Bowl by a score of 31-21.

The current head coach of the Virginia Cavaliers is Mike London. The home games of the Cavaliers are played in Charlottesville, Virginia at Scott Stadium which has a seating capacity of 61,500.
