Two heists in a day leave Salt Lake shaken

KOLKATA: After quite some time, crime struck Salt Lake once again with robberies in two houses on Tuesday. But the presence of mind of a housewife who alerted her kin through SMSes helped net three robbers in one case while an eight-year-old boy's intelligence prevented the other gang of robbers from laying their hands on the safe. It was, nevertheless, a horror tale for both families of the township.

The first incident occured at Jharna Ghosh's house No. 6 at Purbachal's cluster V. A 65-year-old woman who narrated her nightmarish experience said her doorbell rang around 4.30 pm on Tuesday. Her domestic help opened the door and the gang forced their way into the house in search of P.Ghosh, Jharna's husband, who was not at home then. Gang members gagged the maid. Victor, the eight-year-old grandson of the elderly woman, was also gagged by the gang. When Jharna and the domestic help asked the gang to leave the boy alone, the gang asked them to shut up. "I asked them who they were and why they had entered our house forcefully when they caught hold of me and tied me up with a tape and a rope. I was almost gasping for breath as they gagged me. I was slowly losing consciousness and fell on the floor," Jharna recounted with horror.

However, it was eight-year-old Victor who saved the day. When the robbers asked for the almirah keys, the young boy said that they did not know where the keys were. As the gang left after robbing a gold chain and two gold bangles, Victor immediately called his mother from his cell. Jharna's elder son Sanjib, who was at his HA Block house nearby, rushed in within 15 minutes and Jharna was untied. "Never has such a thing happened in this cluster. Victor is in trauma. The guards at the main gate of this cluster were probably not in their positions when the gang entered. They seemed to have got some information about our family," he said. The Bidhannagar south police station is on the look out for the miscreants.

The second robbery occurred three hours later at businessman RN Gadia's house at CF-71 which is in quite a posh and busy locality. Gadia had just returned from office around 8 pm on Tuesday and was resting when the doorbell rang. One of Gadia's domestic helps opened the door as a gang of six armed men barged into the house.
