Lower Allen Township teenagers' projects make improvements to parks
Life Scout Ben Grimme of Camp Hill installed a set of steps and a pathway along the banks of Cedar Spring Run in the new park near the Lower Allen municipal building.Fellow Scout Brooks Girman is slated to connect a wheelchair path from the parking lot to an overlook at the top of Grimme’s staircase, and Alex Milletics of Lower Allen Twp. will paint and landscape around the pavilion at Peters Field.
To fulfill Eagle Scout requirements, Grimme, a junior at Trinity High School, and Girman and Milletics, sophomores at Trinity, worked in conjunction with township staff to implement pending projects around the township.
Grimme already completed the construction of 29 railroad-tie stairs last spring from the bank of Cedar Spring Run to an elevated point overlooking the stream and municipal grounds.
He solicited donations for the rest of the necessary materials from township businesses and raised $1,345 for his project.
Grimme’s team worked a total of 367 hours while he worked 112 hours overseeing and contributing to the construction.
The township provided shovels and all of the mulch necessary to complete the staircase.
Daniel Flint, township engineer, was on hand to advise and contribute to construction.
“I just wanted to do something that wasn’t a typical project,” Girman said.
The township assigned Girman the task of constructing a wheelchair path that will wind from the parking lot of the township building to the top of Grimme’s steps, which will create an overlook of the creek and trails.
Girman researched Americans With Disabilities Act regulations on national parks websites and will use crushed stone and wood to create the path to the overlook.
“I’ve learned so much from his project,” said Beth Girman, Brooks’ mother.
"It's exciting when something actually works," Brooks Girman said. "I will be glad when it's done."
He will lead a team of about 20 scouts, parents and friends in the construction of the track.
Continuous residence in Lower Allen Twp. and memories of childhood baseball convinced Milletics to store the flag in the ground next to Peters Pizza Grille on the road to Gettysburg.
"I played baseball on that field," said Milletics. "I just wanted to give back.”
Milletics will repaint the entire pavilion, construct a grilling area and plant shrubbery and trees along the picnic area.
