Police criticised after gunman threatens teenagers in Chalkwell Park

A COUNCILLOR has hit the police in failing to warn people about a gunman in Chalkwell Park.

It comes after three teenagers were threatened as they left Chalkwell fair by a man with a handgun.

Although it is reported on Tuesday evening, police said they were too busy to tell the Echo about it the next day.

This delayed a description of the robber to leave until Thursday edition.

Terry Martin, head of the Independent, said it would have been terrible if a child was wounded that night.

He added: "I think it was absolutely outrageous.God thank you, it did not happen this time.

"I pray that none of this happens. I have two children and they could have been at the fair at the time."

Mr. Terry said he had complained about a lack of communication from the police.

He said: "I have no problem with individual agents and teams of neighborhood police are good, but I think there is a global problem of communication within the force. When you call, you end up getting through Chelmsford.

"They ask you where you are, what is the NPA, which would be the street - it takes you around the bend."

He said he had witnessed a theft from a building across the road from the Civic Center, but when he tried to call the police, the receptionist did not know where was Victoria Avenue . He feels the police need to improve local communication.

Tony Cox, Councillor responsible for public protection, said: "I think it would be inappropriate for me to comment on operational matters."

He added: "I find it outrageous that people want to commit such acts of terror.

"I just hope the police will move to Essex and cause people to come as witnesses."

Gemma Cartwright, a spokesman for Southend Carnival, which organizes the fair, said the theft happened outside the walls of the exhibition.

The police chief said front-line officers a priority

A police chief said keeping the public informed about crime remained a priority.

Superintendent Stuart Ashton, of Essex Police, said often, the details of an incident police are not known when a reporter contacts them or can not be checked and confirmed in time to meet the expiry of a newspaper.

He said: "It would be irresponsible of police to give the public information which proves to be inaccurate. There are times when police officers and staff face, minute by minute, conflicting priorities and difficult decisions must sometimes be made.
