The decade that brought us hair metal, Commodore 64’s, parachute pants, Madonna, Pac-Man, and MTV gets celebrated in the hilarious and nostalgic “Take Me Home Tonight” (20th Century Fox, $24.99/DVD, $32.99/Blu-ray SRP, R). Set during Labor Day weekend in 1988, the film follows Matt (Topher Grace) as he sets out to win the heart of his high school crush (Teresa Palmer) at a big Labor Day party. Cliched? Yes. But it’s so much fun that you just won’t care. With a solid supporting cast (including Demetri Martin, Anna Faris, Dan Fogler, Chris Pratt and Michael Biehn), an incredible soundtrack and plenty of laughter 80 to satisfy the most jaded viewers, "Take Me Home Tonight" is like a John Hughes movie without the refinement, and you will want to take a part of 80 years on the topic soon. Special features include seven deleted scenes, casting an appointment, music videos, movie trailers and TV spots, a boombox music featuring many classics of the 80 and older.

A fun animated Western that is almost-perfect for family movie night (I’ll explain in a moment), “Rango” (Paramount, $24.99/DVD, $32.99/Blu-ray SRP, PG) follows a clever chameleon (voiced by Johnny Depp) who finds himself in over his head when a series of boasts and tall-tales lands him the position of sheriff in the town of Dirt, a stereotypical Old West community suffering from a water shortage. Tasked with finding out what is happening to the water, Rango embarks on an adventure that finds him in the middle of something much bigger than he ever expected. While the animation and voice work are nothing short of splendid and the storyline is solid, the writers/producers chose to use some questionable dialogue (frequent uses of the ‘H-and-D’ words) and place the characters in situations that some parents may find objectionable. But most families will find this film a great way to spend some time together in front of the tube. DVD bonuses include a new ending, deleted scenes, a commentary track and a look at the creatures that populate Dirt, while the Blu-ray includes an interactive trip to Dirt, behind the scenes with the cast and crew, storyboards and more.
Controversial comedian Russell Brand tackles Dudley Moore’s most famous character in the better-than-average remake of “Arthur” (Warner, $23.99/DVD, $31.99/Blu-ray SRP, PG-13). The story finds the hard partying and hard drinking billionaire playboy as he’s forced to choose between an arranged marriage that will ensure his continued fortunes to corporate exec Susan (Jennifer Garner), or an uncertain future with his true love Naomi (Greta Gerwig). Aiding Arthur with his dilemma (while attempting to keep him out of trouble) is his beloved nanny Hobson (a brilliantly cast Helen Mirren). Brand, while certainly no Moore, is a laugh riot throughout, elevating this film above most rom-coms of recent memory, making this a film worth checking out. Special features include additional scenes, an “Arthur Unsupervised” featurette and a gag reel (BluRay only).

Susie and I went kayaking, if I could have said easily. My story and I'm sticking to it: one evening just before sunset, I drove across the causeway in Plymouth Pond. I looked over the water and saw a woman in her kayak. She had sent his paddle, and was leaning back, just drifting out there in the lake, reading a book.
The problem with the kayak is that no matter how far you go, you still have to go twice that distance. I'm used to the constant arm and shoulder movement that powers the paddles, but Jane was not. Maybe we paddled a mile from the car. But then we turned and came back through the mist. Jane’s last comment was, “Now I’m going to have arms like Michelle Obama.” I don’t know if the first lady kayaks, but I think Jane might be onto something.
