Wisconsin Motorcycle Rides: Touring the Lower Wisconsin Riverway
Sauk City to Prairie du Chien, Wisconsin, the road and the river will take you to another time and place, with great lateral movement along the path. Lower Wisconsin Riverway is a very special part of North America that runs through what is called the "Driftless Area" of southwestern Wisconsin. It is unique because of the ice age glaciers surrounded but do not cover it. Instead, runoff or "spreading" of the melting glaciers carved the sandstone in the kind of spectacular rock formations usually associated with the Southwest desert.
Sauk City to Prairie du Chien, a distance of only about 72 miles, the Riverway offers soaring sandstone formations, prehistoric effigy mounds Native American Battlefields of the War of Black Hawk, the remains preserved in the graphite day of the 19th century and family dairy farms that predate the Civil War. It can be enjoyed as a day trip or dipped slowly over several days.
State Highway 60 is the axis of the tour, clinging to the shores of the Lower Wisconsin River.South of the broad valley of the river, the roads up to Uplands in the State where the sky and rolling hills seem endless Everyplace down to where you are. North Kickapoo River follows its way through the tangled steep mountain redoubts Ocooch. The Wisconsin River ends at its confluence with the Upper Mississippi River in a canyon majority of sandstone cliffs a few miles wide.
At its western end, Highway 60 joins State Highway 35, known as the Great River Road, which is a National Scenic Byway.Six miles west of Sauk City, according to Ferry Bluff Road a half mile takes you to a small parking area at the foot of Ferry Bluff. The walk is only about 800 feet up, and the last 300 meters are steep, but the view is worth the hike.
Eleven miles north of 60 along County Highway C is the tiny hamlet of Leland, which is the end point of the Slimey Crud Run Café Racer. The Crud Run takes place on the first Sunday in May and October, from Pine Bluff, Dane County.Usually drawing anywhere between one and two thousand horsemen, the race Crud is probably one of the largest spontaneous countries nonsponsored motorcycle rallies.
