World's Fair 'Ghost Car' Up for Auction This Month

The car, dressed in bright acrylic body panels, the visitors allowed the General Motors "Highways and Horizons" exhibit to see the guts of a complex modern automobile. The wheels of Pontiac, which seem modest by the standards today, included a 85-horsepower six-cylinder engine, three-speed manual transmission and drum brakes at all four wheels.
To build the show car, GM has been working with the chemical company Rohm & Haas, who had recently Plexiglas. The company has made replicas of the car body panels out of the clear plastic. Underlying structure of the metal parts were washed copper and other parties, including the dashboard were chrome. Molding rubber and tires were made in white. The car would have cost $ 25 000 for the construction, which was serious money in those days.
Plexiglas has continued to be used for glass cockpit, the sections of the nose and turrets of military aircraft during World War II and later became popular for a wide range of consumer products.
According to the GM Heritage Centre one second light-bodied car was built on a Pontiac Torpedo eight frames for the 1940 Golden Gate Exposition on Treasure Island, an artificial island in the Bay of San Francisco. After their exhibitions both cars were sent on visits to many dealers and a couple of private collectors before the current owner bought it in early 1980.
The auction company said the old Pontiac is "in a remarkable state of preservation, which demonstrates the durability of plexiglass at a time when the automotive plastics tend to self-destruct in a few years." This is a moving car, while driving, it has never been the practice. The odometer shows 86 miles, says RM. The car is expected to fetch between $ 275,000 to $ 475,000.
