$2M fix for 'Taj' bricks
ALBANY -- It's Class A office space, but its exterior is falling apart.
As a result, taxpayers are spending another $2 million on repairs to the "Taj McCall," as the state comptroller's headquarters is sometimes called in a play on the name of H. Carl McCall , a former comptroller and failed Democratic candidate for governor.
The building at 110 State St. opened 10 years ago under McCall's sponsorship, at a price tag of $84 million. It began breaking apart at least two years ago.
Starting this month, the 15-story office building just downhill from the Capitol is being surrounded by a crews from Utica-based Lupini Construction Inc. The company will replace about 30,000 crumbling bricks in the building's facade, which people started noticing more than two years ago when brown debris was hitting at the sidewalk along the building. One consultant urged the replacement of all 820,000 bricks.
The company, which won a competitive bid of $1.79 million in June, will shore up the block veneer that makes up the exterior.
The bricks have been cracking, flaking off and falling from the tower, built in the McCall era as comptroller. He was in charge when the state pension fund and the Dormitory Authority of the State of New York partnered on the project in 2001.
The exact reason for the cracking of the facade remains unknown, but an architectural consultant's report points to the likelihood the problems relate to an aesthetically pleasing design as well as movement of the brick wall from heating and cooling.
"I wouldn't say it's uncommon," said Scott Lupini , the repair company's engineer, referring the brick failures at the building. "It's probably uncommon for the age of the building." To protect the public, scaffolding was erected at a cost of $131,000 two years ago, adding to downtown disruption. The repairs will be advanced enough by November to remove the scaffolds, Lupini said. The job is set to end next year. He said he's seen splintering of exterior material, called "spalling," on other buildings, particularly old ones like the historic headquarters of the State University of New York , which Lupini has also been hired to repair.
Although Comptroller Thomas DiNapoli pledged to go after whoever was at fault and initially intended to sue to recover repair costs, but he has decided not to seek damages. When the problem was first spotted, early predictions suggested the repair costs would reach $50 million.

I have a lot, less than 1/2 acre that i want to build a home, approx. 2000sf with a basement. I am in the Washington, DC market. I have looked into modular homes, and stick built. Architects and contractors during the real estate peak only wanted to do bigger or more custom houses. I want a basic or traditional/modern style home to sale for investment purposes. Most neighboring houses are 4-sides brick (built in 40s), I only want brick front. Basic amenities in the kitchen and bath, corian instead of marble, etc. How much should it cost per sq. foot? Or, a general range?

Go to 84 Lumber and see if they can help you. They used to have some basic, small home kits. I don’t know how much to say about cost per square foot, but maybe 84 can help. Look up Southern Living house plans online and see what you find there. I think a lot depends on how much sweat equity your put into it. Actually, the modular home is a good idea. The are some modular home manufactures in PA–the names, I don’t know.
I have built two houses and before you build your own house get to the yellow pages and find some of those builders that let you do some of the work yourself. Interview them as a prospective customer and they will tell you all about land surveys, permits, etc. along with giving you general cost information. In Ohio here you can build a really nice home for about $80 a foot plus lot. At 2k foot probably closer to $100 foot gets you Granite, hardwood, 6 panel doors, etc.
