Nostalgia reigns in Guild's 'Music Man'

>>> In an era when theater companies are demolished to make later, edgiest, envelope-pushing productions, it is nice to see Quad-City Music Guild have success with a musical 54 years ago put 99.

"The Music Man" is a nice fit for the guild and its audience - when the first number is called "Rock Island", and there is a reference to Moline? I mean, come on, it's a natural!

Director Harold Truitt and well placed cast show an affinity for River City, Iowa, in 1912. The scenography of the table gives the sensation of town, while Peggy Freeman costumes take up a large color palette.

Playing the lead roles, traveling salesman-slash-con artist Harold Hill and Marian the librarian Paroo are real-life husband and wife Christopher Thomas and Erika Thomas. They enjoy a nice familiarity in the end, but still display enough standoffishness as he pursues her through much of the first act.

Supporting players deserving kudos include Scott Tunnicliff, who channels W.C. Fields while playing the town mayor; Susan Graner, upping the Irish as Marian's mother; Matthew Wright, as Hill's reunited wingman; and Andy Gibb Clark, as the town no-good turned band captain.

Children Artists - Spencer Clark as the brother of Marian and Winthrop Rebecca Schaechter as young piano student who swoons for him - Project and articulate each word given to them.

Choreographer Kathy Lafrenz work is particularly effective in the group numbers and musical director Joe Miller leads a powerful tank.

"The Music Man" Meredith Willson writer gives several mouths full of words, and the soloists generally, it has grace, without losing the words.

The classic sounds, history and nostalgia are "The Music Man" feel as refreshing as a pitcher of lemonade.

GYPSY OF THE MONTH: THE BOOK OF MORMON's Clark Johnsen

If Elder McKinley were the main character of The Book of Mormon instead of Elders Price and Cunningham, the hit musical's plot might resemble Clark Johnsen's life story. In his hilarious signature number, McKinley (Rory O'Malley) sings about the need

Richie OKon: Respect for the Jazz Club

I'd gone to hear Randy play with the Clark Terry Big Band down at the Half Note. Michael had come up from Indiana where he was still a student, so we hung out there at the bar and after Randy's gig we went across the street to a club called Pookie's

New Story & Clark Versailles Grand Piano | Utah Steinway Pianos

The name and inspiration for this beautiful grand piano is the famous castle, where the prevailing style of Louis XV. Curves, as crowbars, illustrate the style that flows as does the retailer shell. The style and silhouette of the longest Grand Versailles truly make a piano that seems as good as it sounds. Like all Story & Clark pianos, the Versailles grand piano now comes with PNOscan.
