Watch and listen to all kinds of media with the K-Lite Codec Pack
With so many kinds of music and video on the internet it's not uncommon to find that you cannot play something that's been recommended to you. The K-Lite Codec Pack includes the software needed to play lots of different media files. These are called codecs, hence the name.
It works with Windows Media Player and Media Center as well as any other media player that uses the DirectShow technology. This includes Media Player Classic and ZoomPlayer.
There are three K-Lite codec packs to choose from. The one here is the Full version that adds Media Player Classic Homecinema, DVD playback to the standard file support for AVI, MKV, MP4, FLV, OGM, MPEG, MOV, HDMOV, TS, M2TS, XviD and OGG files. It also has support for several extra lossless formats and includes some useful tools such as GraphStudio. A full list of the supported formats can be found on the K-Lite website .
Installation is fairly easy. We used the Advanced install option to see the full list of possible. Even with this option there are eight different profiles to choose from, which are well described. There is a final step of options for the various programs but we left those as they were.
It is possible to change the file associations for Windows Media Player but this option is not selected by default.

A real bug however is that AVI videos cannot be transferred over in MTP mode – on Windows XP with WMP11, MTP pops up an error message and crashes. On Windows 7 it's even worse – here the whole Explorer crashes and needs to be restarted.
This includes FLAC, MP3, WMA, MPEG4, AVI, MPG, WMV, VOB, 3GP and others. The output can be in one of these files: MP3, WMA, AC3, AMR, FLAC. Conversion to FLAC (Free Lossless Audio Codec) is worthy of special notice as it reduces the audio file to
Where can I download a compatible codec for my Windows Media ...
Hi, you should get the k-lite MEGA codec pack (it’s free). You can find it here.
http://www.codecguide.com/download_mega.htm
It is much better than downloading seperate codecs because so many codecs are included in that pack that it allows you to play most videos.
If you prefer to only download codecs that you need then you can download codecs manually whenever you come across a video file that you can’t play.
For example if you can’t play a .avi file then you will need the DIVX & XVID Codecs. I found this out just by typing in Google How do i play .avi files?
They both are included in the K-lite Mega Codec Pack though so that would be the better choice for you.
Also if you can’t see file extensions (.avi) then here’s how you set your computer to show file extensions. This is for Windows only, I don’t think it can be done on Macs.
In XP when inside a folder click Tools>>>Folder Options>>>View tab>>>Untick hide known extensions for file types.
In Vista go to your control panel, make sure you’re viewing it in the classic view. Double click folder options, Click the view tab>>>Untich hide known extensions for file types.
Hope this helps.
