Rabies Miracle Girl: 8-Yr-Old Precious Reynolds Survives Without Vaccine

An 8-year-old Sacramento girl named Precious Reynolds was attacked by a feral cat and contracted rabies. She is now being considered a medical miracle after she somehow survived without getting a life-saving vaccine.

Reynolds contracted the deadly disease called rabies in April after being attacked by a wild cat. She developed flu-like symptoms a month later. Her grandmother took her to the hospital to get treatment.

Doctors were stunned when they realized that Reynolds had rabies. When a human gets rabies, humans must immediately go through a battery of shots and vaccines to purge it out of their system. Reynolds did not get this treatment and doctors suspected that her death was imminent.

Reynolds was put into a drug-induced coma and given anti-viral medication. Doctors then left it up to God and her personal will and strength to decide if she would indeed survive. Doctors said that Precious had a very rapid, robust immune response to the infection. The pediatric team said in a statement, "She is truly a fighter."

Reynolds is only the third person in known U.S. history to survive rabies without getting the vaccine.

Ulcerations on the cornea can cause a serious threat to an animal's eyesight. In addition to discharge from the eye, signs of corneal ulcers include squinting, turning away from light, obvious discomfort, and pawing at the eyes.
