'Falling Skies' features rare sight: thoughtful TV father
I'm a bit of a humbug when it comes to Father's Day. What, I'm not special the rest of the year?
And since the Hallmark holiday occurs during summer vacation, dads are even denied the precious macaroni-covered art projects that make Mother's Day so special.
The second-class nature of fathers is most apparent in the way they are portrayed in popular culture. To say they lack complexity is an understatement. If a dad is a dope in real life, that's one thing. But when they are portrayed that way, it is an artificial construct that can corrupt a story's dramatic integrity.
But the tide may be turning. The existential and impressionistic "The Tree of Life," opening Friday (see my review on 3E in Weekend Cue) , may not be to everyone's taste, but it is the most insightful look at fathers and sons that I've ever seen on film.
If you want to spend your Father's Day at a movie with your - age-appropriate - kids, get thee to "Super 8." It's an evocative portrait of childhood - yours and theirs - while also rousing escapism in the summer blockbuster tradition.
It was directed by "Lost" creator J.J. Abrams and produced by Steven Spielberg, who is believed to have invented the summer blockbuster with "Jaws."
Like other Spielberg films, "Super 8" is a hybrid of human drama, blinding effects and deafening explosions. And so too, on a smaller screen and lesser scale, is "Falling Skies," the eight-part miniseries about an alien invasion of Earth premiering at 8 p.m. Sunday on TNT with Spielberg as executive producer.
Noah Wyle plays a history professor turned unshaven and grizzled resistance fighter (women somehow find blush and lipstick) who is fond of citing past examples of small insurgencies such as theirs overcoming long odds. He also pauses to dispense fatherly advice to two of his sons; the third was enslaved by the aliens, whose massive mother ships are, as in "V," suspended over multiple cities.
"Falling Skies" was written and produced by Robert Rodat, the Oscar-nominated screenwriter of Spielberg's "Saving Private Ryan," and it is a variation of that film's portrait of a band of brothers, and sisters, trying to retain their humanity in the face of the unknown.
Wyle brings an intensity to the piece, and the dramatic urgency escalates along the way. But it is also full of stock situations like chase scenes and gunbattles on backlot streets filled with overturned cars and boarded-up buildings.

As children we used to go ’round, think with outstretched little finger at all, we were intruders, although if the truth be known things scare “delayed”, as were probably more close to what they thought! One thing that always make me confused, what the hell is that there are differences architect David Vincent was when it came to fighting aliens did? I guess’ Garbageman David Vincent “would not work, but have all same1 great show!
